The City and Regional History Department, Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzów, previously known as the Museum in Chorzów, is a museum institution that collects artifacts related to Chorzów and Upper Silesia. It was established in 1925 with the aim of gathering memorabilia from the Bytom lands, which were annexed to Poland after World War I. The museum originated from the merger of collections from Bytom and Świętochłowice, and its collections were integrally linked to the activities of Łukasz and Stanisław Wallis. The official opening took place on December 13, 1935, in a school building on Dąbrowskiego Street. After a hiatus caused by World War II, the museum resumed operations in 1945, and since 1950 it has operated under its current name. Today, the museum is located at Powstańców Street 25, where in 1961 it began collecting contemporary works of art focused on themes related to the industry and daily life of Upper Silesia. Organizational changes in 1991 transformed it into a self-governing cultural institution, and in 2022 the museum adopted its new name, the City and Regional History Department, Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzów. Beyond its significant historical importance, the museum serves as an important cultural hub, attracting the attention of residents and tourists alike with its rich collection and diverse exhibitions. An interesting aspect is its long-standing presence in the region's changing political and social context, making it a witness to local history and culture, bridging traditions with modernity.
