Museum of Kashubian and Pomeranian Literature and Music in Wejherowo

The Museum of Kashubian-Pomeranian Literature and Music in Wejherowo, established in 1968, is a key center of Kashubian culture, with a history dating back to before World War II. The creation of the museum was initiated by the activities of regionalists and Kashubian organizations, and in 1967, after the collection of Franciszka Majkowska was donated, premises were obtained from local authorities. The museum, initially named the Museum of Kashubian-Pomeranian Literature, acquired new collections related to Kashubian music, and its statutes were adopted in 1968. The museum is housed in the Przebendowski Palace, part of a former palace and park complex that has been gradually restored. The building reflects the architectural tradition of the 18th century and is an important landmark on the cultural map of the region. The museum organizes numerous events, including academic conferences, author meetings, exhibitions, competitions, and concerts, and collaborates with regional societies. Its collections include unique literature and music that document Kashubian culture. The museum preserves the legacies of prominent writers, composers, and folklorists, as well as rich collections of old prints and works of art. In 2019, it was awarded the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture "Gloria Artis." Interestingly, the museum also engages in publishing activities, producing popular and academic works in both Polish and Kashubian. This center of culture and history not only gathers collections but also actively participates in promoting and nurturing Kashubian heritage.
