W skrócie

wikipedia
Nowy Port is a district of Gdańsk located at the mouth of the Martwa Wisła, with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. Partially situated within the former port area, Nowy Port was an important residential and industrial center. Its name derives from the German "Neufahrwasser," meaning "new waterway," which emerged as a response to the need for a new port due to overcrowding in the Gdańsk Motława. Architecturally, the district combines pre-war tenement houses with newer prefabricated blocks and a notable "falowiec" (wave-shaped building) from 1978, which is a distinctive form of housing. The area features numerous historic landmarks, such as the Church of St. Hedwig, the Maritime Mission Church, and the "Pilot Tower" lighthouse. Culturally, Nowy Port is vibrant, with art galleries and the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art, while local associations promote art and engage residents in artistic events. Historically, Nowy Port has undergone many transformations—from a fishing village to a port competing with Gdańsk, followed by dynamic development in the 20th century, which ended in decline after World War II. The conversion of port areas into recreational spaces and revitalization plans are also noteworthy. Although transportation in Nowy Port is currently limited, its roots trace back to the 19th century with the introduction of tram and rail connections. The district has a rich sporting tradition, and the Portowiec Gdańsk club is one of its symbols. Interestingly, in the past, Nowy Port was home to a sugar refinery, a brewery, and many other manufacturing plants, which were eventually closed down. Today, Nowy Port is a place where history meets modernity, offering residents and visitors unique cultural and architectural experiences.
