wikipedia
Obkas is a village located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the Sępólno County, within the administrative district of Kamień Krajeński. Its history dates back to at least 1217, and the earliest records of the settlement point to its ecclesiastical origins. In 1347, the village was granted location rights under Chełmno law, and in the 16th century, it was owned by the Archbishops of Gniezno. The changing names of the village over the centuries—such as Wowogusse, Wobekaz, or Obkass—reflect its rich history. The church in Obkas, dating back to the 14th century and initially a subsidiary of Kamień, was rebuilt multiple times. In 1789, it was at risk of collapse, and a new church was erected in 1877, dedicated to the Apostles Philip and James. Obkas was also a site of historical events, including raids and conflicts, highlighting its active role in the region during the Middle Ages. In 1772, the village had a population of 39 men and 15 women, and records from that period illustrate the development of agriculture and local crafts. By 1905, the total area of Obkas was 1152.2 hectares, and documents from 1772 mention various occupations among its inhabitants, including village leaders (sołtysi), farmers, and artisans. The sołtysi in Obkas played a significant role in local administration, with privileges confirmed by archbishops. For example, in 1688, the sołtys privilege was granted to Andreas Pankau and Christian Radatz, who were tasked with maintaining the morality of the residents and organizing transport for the clergy. Obkas is a place that combines a rich history, unique cultural and architectural aspects, and interesting traditions of the local community, making it a noteworthy point on the map of Poland.
