Okolice

Okulice is a village in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, within Bochnia County, with a rich history dating back to medieval times. The first records of the settlement come from 1285. Okulice was originally owned by the Benedictines of Tyniec, and its participation in political conflicts, such as the wars against the Tatars and Swedes, significantly influenced its development. In the 19th century, it transformed into an important cooperative center, where an Agricultural Circle was established in 1890, and a Savings and Loan Association was registered in 1906. In 1927, a Dairy Cooperative was initiated, which gained great popularity, bringing together 740 members by 1929. The church in Okulice also has a long history, initially associated with the parish in Cerekwia, and its architectural development included numerous reconstructions and consecrations. The first chapel was built in the 16th century, and subsequent wooden and brick churches were consecrated by prominent church figures. The most attention is drawn to the miraculous image of the Mother of God, which has been venerated since the 16th century and was crowned in 1962. Okulice is also home to historical monuments, such as a wooden bell tower from 1837, listed in the register of historical sites. In a cultural context, Okulice is a place deeply connected with the history of the region. The village witnessed many events, including political and economic struggles related to various influences. Testimonies of this history include folk songs that recount local battles and traditions. The local community values its cultural heritage, as emphasized by numerous pilgrimages to the sanctuary. Socially, Okulice is known for its educational and cultural activities. The General Leopold Okulicki Public Primary School was established here, as well as a Brass Orchestra, which has been operating since 1936. The youth also participates in the local sports club M.U.K.S. Strzelec, founded in 2000. Interestingly, Okulice was the site of significant historical incidents, including events related to World War II. Okulice is a place that combines a rich historical and cultural heritage with important social initiatives, making it an interesting area both for tourism and education.
