Old Katkowice

Stare Kotkowice, also known as Alt Kuttendorf, is a village located in the Opole Voivodeship, within the Prudnik County, in Upper Silesia, in the Racibórz Valley. The village boasts a rich history dating back to the 13th century, when it was first mentioned in a deed of donation by Duke Casimir I of Opole to the monastery in Czarnowąsy. The village lies at the intersection of the Amber Route and the trail from Wieliczka to the Czech Republic. Over the centuries, it has witnessed numerous political and cultural changes, including periods under Habsburg Monarchy, the Kingdom of Prussia, and post-war border shifts. The village celebrated its 830th anniversary in 2006. Stare Kotkowice features historic architectural landmarks, including the Church of St. Barbara from 1847, as well as numerous preserved chapels and farm buildings. The village also holds cultural significance, being inhabited by both the German minority and Silesians, which influences local traditions and language. The German Circle of Friendship operates in the village, promoting local culture. Stare Kotkowice also has interesting socio-historical aspects; during the Upper Silesia plebiscite in 1921, the residents decisively voted in favor of Germany, reflecting their cultural roots. Monuments commemorating those who fell in both world wars have also been preserved. Additionally, the village benefits from good road and rail transport, facilitating connections with neighboring towns. In terms of environmental protection, the village enjoys a moderate climate and rich natural surroundings, attracting nature enthusiasts.
