Oliwa, a district of Gdańsk, boasts a rich history dating back to 1186, when it was first mentioned in the context of a Cistercian monastery that for centuries influenced the development of the region. Over the years, Oliwa witnessed numerous invasions and destructions, such as raids by the Prussians, the Teutonic Knights, and the Swedes, as well as major events like the Battle of Oliwa in 1627. A tremendous asset of Oliwa is its architecture, featuring the historic Oliwa Archcathedral, the Church of St. James, and the complex of monastery buildings. The urban layout of Old Oliwa, including the Oliwa Stream, provides a charming backdrop for the architecture and gardens. Culture in Oliwa is manifested through the International Organ Music Festivals held in the Archcathedral since 1958, as well as numerous other events, including the Botanical Garden, where unique flora can be admired. The district is also home to many educational institutions, such as the University of Gdańsk and the Academy of Physical Education. Oliwa abounds in interesting facts—for example, legendary sites related to the plague in the 18th century or the activity of Napoleonic troops. Modern Oliwa is developing dynamically, with new office and social investments, while preserving its historical heritage, including natural monuments and traditions such as the Oliwa Peace Hejnal, which sounds daily from the Gatehouse. After the war, Oliwa was incorporated into Gdańsk and transformed into a modern district while retaining its unique architectural and cultural features. In recent years, numerous local initiatives have been undertaken to promote the history and culture of Oliwa, including organized festivals and cultural events that strengthen the local community.
