Opera Nova

Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, established in 1956, is the only opera theater in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and one of the ten opera stages in Poland. Nationalized in 1960, this cultural institution operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and the Self-Government of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Its headquarters, located in a picturesque bend of the Brda River, is housed in a modern building whose design was selected through an architectural competition in 1961. The construction of the facility lasted from 1973 to 2006, making it one of the longest-developed theater buildings in Poland. It is characterized by an original architectural form with three intersecting circles, which has been compared to the Sydney Opera House. The interiors are perfectly suited for staging operas, ballets, and musicals, and the large auditorium can accommodate 803 spectators. Opera Nova has been organizing the Bydgoszcz Opera Festivals since 1994, showcasing the achievements of music theaters from Poland and abroad. The repertoire includes opera classics, operettas, and musicals such as "Carmen," "Faust," and "Halka." The history of opera in Bydgoszcz dates back to the 17th century, with earlier theatrical and musical forms developing in various institutions. Over the years, Opera Nova has become a venue for premieres and important cultural events, attracting artists from around the world. The director of the opera is Maciej Figas, who has held this position since 1992. An interesting fact is that until 1990, the institution changed its name multiple times, eventually adopting the title Opera Nova. The building is also used as a congress center, and its surroundings include footbridges and boulevards along the Brda River, making it an attractive destination not only for music lovers but also for tourists.
