The Municipal Zoological Garden in Płock, established on May 1, 1951, covers an area of 17 hectares and is located on a high Vistula escarpment, making it an ideal place for recreation and relaxation for residents. In 2007, the zoo was home to approximately 3,700 animals, representing over 320 species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. It is also distinguished by its extensive freshwater aquarium collection, the largest in Poland, and a herpetarium featuring unique species such as venomous Mexican beaded lizards. A notable resident is Marta, a female alligator and the oldest inhabitant of Polish zoos at 89 years old, who appeared in the film "Hydrozagadka." From 1956 to 1981, the zoo was directed by Tadeusz Taworski, and it is currently managed by Krzysztof Kelman. In recent years, construction and renovation works have been carried out to enhance the garden's aesthetics, and it has been registered with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. The Płock Zoo combines architectural appeal with a rich diversity of fauna and plays an important role in education and environmental conservation.
