Overview

wikipedia
Pieckowo, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, is a village with a rich history and a distinct Masurian character. Its former names were Stangenwalde and later Pötschendorf. In 1386, the village received a privilege from the Komtur of Balga, which testifies to its medieval significance. In the 18th century, Pieckowo was owned by Major General von Rappen, who built beer stalls near the Jesuit border. In the 19th century, after a period of population growth, Pieckowo became the seat of the municipality and the district police offices before World War II. After the war, the village became part of Poland and underwent various administrative reforms, eventually becoming part of the Reszel municipality. Within Pieckowo lies Lake Pieckowskie, which currently covers an area of 18.9 hectares, although it was larger in the past. Interestingly, Pieckowo has deposits of natural aggregate and peat. Notable heritage sites include a cemetery, a former early 20th-century railway station, and a brick school from 1907. The school, converted into a Polish institution after the war, educated youth until its closure in 1999. Pieckowo also had a folk high school, and cultural life flourished in the 1950s, mainly due to the organization of community centers and artistic groups. Currently, the Pieckowo 2022 Association operates in the village, aiming to promote its development. In the past, transportation to and from Pieckowo relied on railways, but nowadays all residents use the PKS bus service to travel between the main cities of the region.
