wikipedia
Enea Elektrownia Połaniec, located in Zawada near Połaniec, is one of the largest coal-fired power plants in Poland, with a gross capacity of 1,882 MW. Its infrastructure consists of seven power units and the "Green Block," which is the world's largest unit powered 100% by biomass. Annually, the power plant produces approximately 8.4 TWh of electricity, accounting for nearly 6% of the country's total energy production. The history of the plant dates back to the 1970s, when its construction began amid numerous irregularities, wastefulness, and investigations by the militia. Significant events in the facility's history include floods, such as the Millennium Flood of 1997, which threatened to inundate the plant, and another in 2010, during which intensive protective efforts succeeded in preventing damage. The power plant has undergone numerous organizational changes—in 1996, it became a state-owned single-shareholder company, was later transformed into a company with shares held by Electrabel, and subsequently became part of the Engie group. In 2016, it was sold to Enea and converted into Enea Elektrownia Połaniec S.A. A significant undertaking in recent years has been the construction of the Green Block and the modernization of existing units, which has contributed to reducing CO₂ emissions and extending the plant's operational life by another 20 years. Enea Połaniec plays a key role in Poland's energy system and is actively involved in initiatives promoting ecology and renewable energy sources.
