wikipedia
Racibórz Prison, established between 1843 and 1851, is a Neo-Gothic structure with a distinctive cross-shaped layout and a tower that once served as a water tower. Operating as a closed-type penitentiary, it houses recidivists and inmates with non-psychotic mental disorders. In 1992, the facility was added to the register of historical monuments, underscoring its regional significance. It features over 2,600 m² of residential cell space and a total area exceeding 94,000 m². The prison includes multiple organizational units, such as a therapeutic department and a Garment Industry Enterprise, which has engaged prisoners in work as part of rehabilitation efforts since 1946. In the 1990s, the enterprise produced uniforms for various services. The prison gained a reputation as one of the most secure facilities in Silesia, especially after 2002, when a wing for the most dangerous criminals was opened, housing figures like Polish gangster Ryszard Niemczyk. Reflecting evolving correctional concepts, the prison has undergone several modernizations, including a major overhaul in 1919 and a comprehensive renovation between 1974 and 1980, which brought it up to modern sanitary standards. It also boasts extensive health and therapeutic facilities, including an outpatient clinic. The prison hosts the "Paragrafek" Sustainable Development Club, which organizes ecological initiatives and artistic workshops to support inmate rehabilitation. In 2008, the facility employed over 230 staff members, with around 165 prisoners working in the Garment Industry Enterprise. With its historical legacy and diverse rehabilitation programs, the prison plays a significant role in shaping both inmates and the local community.
