wikipedia
The Red Sea Tower in Stargard is a Gothic defensive structure located in the Old Town, at the intersection of Warowna and W. Łokietka streets. It was built in the second half of the 14th century and reaches a height of 34 meters. It is considered one of the most significant achievements of medieval defensive architecture in the Pomerania region. Along with St. Mary's Collegiate Church and the city fortifications, the tower was designated a Historic Monument by decree of the President of Poland in 2010. Its name, "Red Sea," originates from legends associated with the Thirty Years' War and bloody events that took place nearby, although it is more likely that it refers to the rusty marshes surrounding the location. Architecturally, the tower features a rectangular stone base and a cylindrical brick shaft. Its façade is adorned with decorative diamond patterns, and inside, there are eight levels with observation and firing windows, arranged in a distinctive checkerboard pattern. The top of the structure is crowned with an octagonal spire. Traces of a former prison dungeon and a platform for mounting cannons have survived to this day, testifying to its military function. The tower is open to tourists, making it an attractive part of Stargard's heritage and an important landmark in the region's history.
