wikipedia
Reszel, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, is a city rich in history and architecture. It boasts numerous historical monuments, including the 14th-century Castle of the Warmian Bishops, which has undergone many transformations and now serves as a hotel and art gallery. The Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul, whose construction began in 1348, is another valuable site, with its interior adorned by the works of local craftsmen. Reszel is also known for its Gothic bridges over the Sajna River and fragments of defensive walls. Historically, the city lies in the area of ancient Bartia, and its fate was tied to the Teutonic struggles, membership in the Prussian Confederation, and later the Kingdom of Poland. In 1454, Reszel became a Polish border town, and the local bishop Fabian Luzjański played a significant role in its defense against the Teutonic invasion. The city flourished during the Baroque period, with numerous artistic workshops and a Jesuit college that educated both Catholics and Protestants. An interesting fact is that in 1811, Reszel witnessed the last burning of a witch at the stake in the Kingdom of Prussia. After the First Partition of Poland, Reszel came under Prussian rule, and in the 19th century, it suffered numerous fires that devastated the city. After World War II, it was reintegrated into Poland, and its residents undertook the reconstruction and renovation of its monuments. Today, Reszel enjoys international recognition as one of the first Polish cities in the Cittàslow network, promoting the idea of sustainable development and local communities. It also attracts tourists with its picturesque natural pilgrimage routes, including the path to the popular sanctuary in Święta Lipka.
