Retkinia

Retkinia is a housing estate in Łódź that originally functioned as a village, with a history dating back to the 14th century. The name "Retkinia" may derive from Old Polish words referring to fishing nets or be associated with the settlement of peasant fugitives. The most important archaeological find is a woman's grave from the 3rd century AD. In the 16th century, Retkinia was a small village, and its significance grew in the 19th century when the settlement began to merge with the development of nearby Łódź. By the 1970s, a housing estate made of prefabricated concrete blocks was built here, which spurred the urbanization process, and the population grew to around 6,000. Architecturally, Retkinia is characterized mainly by multi-family blocks, with fragments of the old rural buildings still remaining.
