Rumia

Rumia is a city located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, within Wejherowo County, situated on the Zagórska Struga River. It forms the Little Kashubian Tricity together with Wejherowo and Reda. The history of Rumia dates back to the early Iron Age, and the first recorded mention of the settlement comes from 1223/1224, when the village was granted to the Cistercian Abbey in Oliwa. Rumia was granted town rights in 1954, formed through the merger of several villages. During World War II, the city witnessed many tragic events, including battles and German occupation, which significantly impacted its development. In the 1930s, Rumia was also home to a civilian airport that handled domestic and international flights. During the German occupation, the airport was expanded, but after the war, it was decommissioned, and the surrounding area was transformed into residential districts. Among Rumia's architectural heritage are landmarks such as the Roman Catholic cemetery and the ruins of the Holy Cross Church, as well as a classicist manor house dating from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, which now serves cultural purposes. The city is developing dynamically, and its residents benefit from numerous cultural amenities, including a variety of schools and institutions. An interesting fact is that Rumia is linked to the history of aviation, having had its own airport before World War II, which also served military purposes. Today, the city is characterized by diverse infrastructure and an active social life that promotes sports, education, and culture. Rumia cooperates with international partners and has established ties with twin towns, fostering cultural exchange and the development of the local community.
