wikipedia
Rysy is the highest peak in the High Tatras, reaching an elevation of 2,501 meters above sea level, with three summits, the highest of which lies entirely within Slovak territory. The peak holds significant tourist appeal, attracting numerous visitors thanks to its spectacular views, which on clear days can extend up to 200 kilometers. There are two main hiking trails leading to the summit: the more challenging northern route and the gentler southern route through the Mięguszowiecka Valley. The northern trail requires good physical condition and proper equipment, while the southern route offers an easier ascent, though it includes some technical sections such as metal steps. The peak is known for its rich alpine flora, and the area is home to chamois, marmots, and numerous bird species. The history of climbing Rysy dates back to 1840, when Eduard Blásy became the first recorded summer ascendant, with the first winter ascent recorded in 1884. Rysy has been the site of many tragic accidents due to its challenging conditions, including avalanches. Although demanding, the area has repeatedly attracted famous figures, including Marie Skłodowska-Curie and Vladimir Lenin. Beyond its tourist role, Rysy also holds natural significance as part of the Crown of Polish Mountains, the Crown of the Tatras, and the Crown of Europe, underscoring its importance in the context of preserving the region's natural and cultural heritage. The name "Rysy" derives from the characteristic couloirs in the massif, reflecting the development of language and local highlander culture.
