Sawin is a rural commune located in the Lublin Voivodeship, within the Chełm County, with its administrative seat in the village of Sawin. The commune covers an area of 190.2 km², of which 69% is agricultural land and 24% is forested. It is an important part of the region, constituting 10.69% of the area of Chełm County. According to data from June 2004, Sawin was inhabited by 5,698 people. The commune is known for its rich natural heritage, including two nature reserves: Bachus, which protects a deciduous forest with sessile oak, and Serniawy, which safeguards a fragment of alder-elm riparian forest. The commune comprises numerous village administrations (sołectwa), such as Bukowa Mała, Chutcze, Czułczyce, Łukówek, as well as Malinówka and Sajczyce, reflecting the diversity of local communities. With a rich history dating back to pre-war times, Sawin was inhabited by various ethnic groups, contributing to its cultural mosaic. Between 1975 and 1998, the commune was part of the Chełm Voivodeship, which reflects its historical administrative development. It is also worth noting its proximity to other communes, such as Chełm, Hańsk, and Wola Uhruska, creating opportunities for cooperation and cultural exchange in the region.
