wikipedia
Szonów, located in the Opole Voivodeship, within the Głogówek municipality in Upper Silesia, is a village with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. First mentioned in 1245, Szonów was already a settlement site in the 6th–10th centuries, with documented archaeological sites linked to the Lusatian culture. From a historical perspective, the village has undergone various changes in fortune, from being part of a bishop's estate to belonging to the Kingdom of Prussia and later, after World War II, coming under Polish administration. Architecturally, the dominant landmark is the Church of St. Hedwig, built in 1580 and repeatedly renovated, which is listed in the register of historical monuments. Szonów has also preserved its rural layout, along with several chapels and houses that reflect local heritage. The culture of Szonów is enriched by folk legends, such as tales of a wish-granting hare or a black dog guarding the village. Many of the village's residents are migrants who arrived from the Eastern Borderlands, contributing to the region's cultural mosaic. Szonów also offers sports attractions, including the LZS Farmer Szonów football club, and rich tourist traditions tied to local trails and events like the European Cycling Week. The village is active in fire protection and safety, with a Volunteer Fire Department unit and support from the Police and Border Guard due to its location. Szonów is also home to several notable individuals, including the physician and botanist Anton Johann Krocker and the poet Tadeusz Soroczyński. Over the years, the village has witnessed many important events that have shaped its cultural and social heritage.
