The Silesian Opera in Bytom, founded in 1945 by Adam Didur, is a renowned Polish musical theater. Its seat, the building of the former Municipal Theater, constructed between 1899 and 1901 in the neoclassical style, has 423 seats and has served theatrical art from the very beginning. The history of the Opera began with the premiere of Stanisław Moniuszko's "Halka," which initiated its activities. In its early years, the Opera assembled an outstanding ensemble of artists, including many musicians exiled from Lviv, significantly enriching its repertoire. Throughout its history, over 250 premieres have been staged, featuring works by both Polish composers and great masters of world opera, such as Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini. Also noteworthy are the attempts to stage lesser-known operas; the repertoire includes world premieres of several contemporary compositions. The theater has gained recognition both domestically and internationally, including in the United States, where "Halka" was presented during several tours. An interesting event in the Opera's history is its decoration with the Order of the Banner of Work, First Class, in 1955. The Opera building underwent modernization, during which its original elements were preserved, and statues of Frédéric Chopin and Stanisław Moniuszko were placed in front of the building. The main hall is adorned with numerous busts of outstanding artists associated with opera. The theater also organizes the National and International Adam Didur Opera Vocal Competition, which attracts young singers from around the world. Festival and gala concerts are also held in Bytom, underscoring the Opera's importance on Poland's cultural map. The Municipal Theater, which houses the opera, is an important architectural element of the city, and its history as a center of musical culture dates back to the beginning of the 20th century.
