wikipedia
The Silesian Stadium, located in Chorzów, is a multi-functional sports facility whose history dates back to the 1950s. It was designed by architect Julian Brzuchowski, and its construction began in 1951. The official inauguration took place on July 22, 1956. Initially, the stadium could accommodate 87,000 spectators, but due to adjustments in later years, its capacity decreased; to this day, it can hold 55,211 fans permanently and about 85,000 during concerts. The construction of the stadium incurred significant costs, but the local community actively supported the project, contributing millions of working hours. The stadium has undergone numerous modernizations, including a major renovation between 2009 and 2017, which introduced, among other things, a full roof over the stands and a new athletics track. The venue is used for football and athletics competitions, as well as music events. Important matches of the Polish national team, which have gained legendary status, have been held on its pitch, including encounters with powerful teams. The stadium has also hosted many prestigious events, such as the Speedway World Championship and Jehovah's Witnesses Congresses. It is worth noting that in 2020, the stadium was transformed into the National Athletics Stadium. Interestingly, it was here that the attendance record of 130,000 people was set in 1973 during the Individual Speedway World Championship. The Silesian Stadium is not only a symbol of sports but also a place of historical narrative that reflects the culture of Upper Silesia. It has hosted many famous music bands, such as Metallica and Guns N’ Roses, and music events attract crowds of enthusiasts. To this day, the Silesian Stadium has played a key role in the region's sports and cultural life, witnessing many important moments in the history of Polish sports and music.
