Skrzyszów, historically known as Skrzischow, is a village located in the Silesian Voivodeship, within Wodzisław County. It boasts a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Situated on the Rybnik Plateau, the village covers an area of 11.56 km² and, as of 2016, was inhabited by 3,672 people. Historically, Skrzyszów went through various phases, including periods under the Czech Kingdom and German influences. The village was ruled by knights, and the Skrzyszowski family name appears in documents related to the estate as early as the 16th century.
Architecturally, the village retains traditional building styles, with houses characteristic of the region. In 1936, a new parish church dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel was built, which remains a significant center for the religious life of the community. The forests of Skrzyszów are predominantly deciduous, reflecting the area’s rich flora and fauna. Favorable natural conditions support the development of hunting clubs and recreational activities.
Culture also holds an important place in Skrzyszów. In 1932, the sports club LKS Gwiazda Skrzyszów was founded, which has successfully participated in local football and table tennis competitions, becoming a key element of social life in the village. It is worth noting that during the Upper Silesia plebiscite of 1921, Skrzyszów showed strong attachment to Poland, with 90% of votes in favor of belonging to the country.
Wars, especially World War II, had a tragic impact on Skrzyszów, with approximately 70% of buildings destroyed and residents suffering significant losses. After the war, the village undertook intensive reconstruction efforts. Electrification in 1946 and the development of education contributed to the modernization of social life. Skrzyszów is home to a small kindergarten and primary school, which support the continued development of the local community.
An interesting fact is the evolution of the village’s name, whose original form was distorted in Latin, Czech, and later German documents. Today, Skrzyszów is an example of a place where history, tradition, and modernity intertwine, creating the unique character of this small locality. Under the new administrative system introduced in 1999, Skrzyszów belongs to Wodzisław County and continues to play an active role within the Godów municipality.
