Sośnica, a district of Gliwice since January 1, 1927, is located on the eastern outskirts of the city, bordering Zabrze. The district consists of two parts: Stara Sośnica (Old Sośnica) and Nowa Sośnica (New Sośnica). Stara Sośnica is characterized by pre-war German residential blocks and post-World War II housing estates, such as the Józef Bem and Stefan Żeromski estates. Nowa Sośnica, on the other hand, is architecturally diverse, with newer educational, sports, and cultural facilities. The Kłodnica River flows through the district, and its surroundings feature fishponds, allotment gardens, and the Stadium of the Sośnica Gliwice Sports Club, which hosts numerous sports and recreational events. Sośnica also has a branch of the Municipal Public Library, actively participating in local community life.
Historically, Sośnica was a village founded in the 13th century by Wrocław Bishop Thomas I, which over time transformed into an Upper Silesian working-class district. The region's development was linked to industry, particularly mining, leading to significant population growth and infrastructure expansion. Mines operated in Sośnica, including the Sośnica Mine, whose history also includes tragic events, such as a fire that claimed the lives of 55 miners. The district is home to two Roman Catholic churches and two Jehovah's Witnesses communities.
From an educational perspective, Sośnica offers a variety of primary schools, middle schools, and high schools, fostering youth development. The area has also contributed to Polish sports culture, producing many famous footballers, such as Włodzimierz Lubański and Lukas Podolski. An interesting fact is the Gliwice Sośnica highway junction, which connects the A1 and A4 motorways with national road 44, making it one of the largest road junctions in Poland. The district's name refers to the pine forests that once covered the area.
Sośnica is a place with a rich history and a dynamic community, blending tradition with modernity. The district attracts residents thanks to its location, infrastructure, and recreational opportunities.
