wikipedia
The Church of St. John the Theologian in Nowoberezowo is a wooden Orthodox temple, built in 1771 as a Uniate church, funded by Izabela Branicka. It belongs to the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord and the Warsaw-Bielsk Diocese of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The church features a single-nave log structure with a non-oriented layout and polychromes on the ceiling, which were restored in 1995. The presbytery is straight-ended, and the side sections include sacristies and a vestibule with a bell tower added in 1883. Several renovations were carried out in the 20th century, including in 2016 and 2021, aimed at preserving the monument, with works funded from various sources, including public funds. An interesting discovery was made in October 2023, when over 20 elements of a 17th-century iconostasis were found in the church attic, making it the oldest known iconostasis in the Podlasie region. The church was entered into the register of monuments in 1951. Nearby, there are graves and votive crosses, as well as a place for blessing water at the well, associated with Christian holiday celebrations. The church's status changed to a filial church in the late 19th century, after the construction of a new brick church. This rich cultural heritage combines architectural values with the history of the region, making the church a significant landmark in Podlasie.
