St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist and St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Pabianice

The Church of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist and St. Lawrence the Martyr in Pabianice, located at 22 Stary Rynek, is the oldest church in the city and one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in the Archdiocese of Łódź. Its architectural form is a three-nave basilica in the shape of a cross, featuring a distinctive tower that is square in its lower sections and octagonal in the upper parts. The structure was built in Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, designed by Ambroży Włoch. The church's interior is rich in Baroque details, with the 17th-century main altar depicting Christ Crucified against the backdrop of Jerusalem, surrounded by sculptures of the patron saints. Notable features include the altars in the transepts and the pulpit adorned with figures of the Evangelists. A valuable element is the portrait of Fr. Mateusz Mikliński, a distinguished parish priest. The church is filled with historical memorabilia, such as the tomb of Anna Sułowska, a plaque commemorating Judyta Herman, and burial crypts of past priests. External details, like the coat of arms of the Kraków chapter and inscriptions, further emphasize its historical significance. The church's history spans key dates, from the start of construction in 1583, through various renovations, to modern events such as the consecration of new bells in 1958. The church reflects the rich Catholic tradition in the region, as well as years of struggles with fires and damages that have repeatedly affected its structure. An interesting detail is the monument to St. Maximilian Kolbe located beside the church, along with a statue of the Virgin Mary from 1899. Overall, it is an important landmark on the cultural and historical map of Pabianice, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a witness to many significant social and religious events.
