Statue of St. John of Nepomuk in Głogów

The statue of St. John of Nepomuk in Głogów is a contemporary sculpture by Dariusz Maściuch, installed in 2003 to replace a figure lost in 1945. The new statue was created after an unsuccessful attempt to recover the original sculpture from the Oder River. It stands on a pedestal containing period documents sealed in a steel tube, adding to its historical value. The sculpture is made of white sandstone, while elements such as the head, cross, and buttons are crafted from steel, creating an interesting contrast. The statue measures 140 x 40 x 24 cm, and its base is 148 x 65 x 65 cm. It serves not only as an architectural element but also as an important cultural symbol for the local community. Due to its significance, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk is strategically located just behind the Bridge of Tolerance, at the entrance to Ostrów Tumski, making it a landmark for residents and tourists. Interestingly, this saint is the patron of bridges and rivers, which perfectly aligns with its location. Moreover, the statue is part of a rich cultural tradition tied to the history and religiosity of the region.
