Sterdyń is a rural commune located in the Masovian Voivodeship, within the Sokołów County, with its administrative seat in the village of Sterdyń—previously known as Sterdyń-Osada until the end of 1999. The commune was established as a result of administrative reforms and, between 1975 and 1998, it belonged to the Siedlce Voivodeship. Covering an area of 130.03 km², it was home to 4,596 people as of June 2004, reflecting a diverse and culturally rich local community. The commune is characterized by a high proportion of agricultural land, which accounts for 74% of its total area, underscoring its agrarian nature. It comprises numerous village administrative units (sołectwa), such as Białobrzegi, Golanki, and Sterdyń, as well as many smaller settlements.
