wikipedia
Szczawin Kościelny is a rural commune in Poland, located in the Masovian Voivodeship, within Gostynin County, with its administrative seat in the village of Szczawin Kościelny. The commune boasts a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by nearly 527 archaeological sites, including camps, settlements, and burial grounds. During the Funnelbeaker culture period and the early Bronze Age, communities developed in this area, leaving behind numerous artifacts. The region entered historical times during the Roman influence period, which saw the rise of the Przeworsk culture. In the Middle Ages, the first settlements emerged in and around Szczawin Kościelny, and in 1299, Duke Bolesław II granted these lands to Jan of Prawdzic. The settlements thrived thanks to extensive economic immunities. In the 16th century, the village of Trębki held town rights, making it a significant local center. Suserz, another important locality, was known for its church founded in the 16th century, which has survived to this day. During the Reformation, the owner of Suserz converted to Protestantism, impacting the local community. Meanwhile, the January Uprising saw the commune witness several important battles, with local activist Ewelina Pruszakowska standing out for her patriotic stance. The commune suffered greatly during World War II; many teachers and priests lost their lives, and churches were repurposed as storage facilities. After the war, the community faced the challenge of rebuilding. Today, the commune comprises several village districts, including Adamów, Białka, Helenów, and Suserz, with its development supported by a growth center. Szczawin Kościelny is notable not only for its religious architecture but also for its historical richness, which reflects the cultural and social transformations of the region. The commune is an essential part of the local landscape, blending history, tradition, and modernity.
