wikipedia
Szerzyny is a village located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in the Tarnów district. The seat of the municipality has a rich history dating back to the 12th century, and it formally began to develop after its establishment in 1368. In the 18th century, the village was owned by noble families such as the Ociescy, Uniatyccy, and Kochanowscy, who significantly influenced its economic and cultural growth. In 1731, with the consent of Augustus II the Strong, plans were made to transform the village into a town, which did not result in a name change but granted new trading privileges. Szerzyny witnessed historical events, including the Galician uprising in 1846, which brought tragedies and destruction due to the uprising and epidemic diseases. The village also experienced military actions during both world wars, leaving behind three war cemeteries and memorial monuments. The value of Szerzyny also lies in its registered monuments, including the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Scapular, built between 1927 and 1928, characterized by eclectic brick and stone architecture. The church features a three-nave hall with interesting elements, such as a tower with a pyramidal spire and an interior with polychrome by Stanisław Szmuc. Also located here are war cemeteries No. 31, 32, and 33, which testify to the tragic fate of the inhabitants during World War I and World War II. The area of Szerzyny also contains historical remnants of earlier churches, including the ruins of the larch Church of All Saints, which burned down in 1933. An interesting figure is Marian Sikorski, who saved the lives of Jews during World War II and was awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations. The Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary also operates here. Today, Szerzyny is not only a place with a rich history but also a living community with preserved traditions and cultural attractions.
