Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument in Łódź

The Tadeusz Kościuszko Monument in Łódź, located in Freedom Square, is a monumental statue unveiled on December 14, 1930. It depicts Kościuszko standing upright, leaning against a sapling symbolizing the "Tree of Justice," with a document in his hand. The monument, standing 17 meters tall, features an octagonal pedestal adorned with bronze reliefs illustrating key events from the Leader's life, such as his oath in Kraków's main square and his collaboration with George Washington. The history of the monument is rich and intertwined with historical events: the decision to build it was made in 1917, and after World War I, the idea was revisited in 1918. The final design was selected through a competition in 1926, won by Mieczysław Lubelski. Destroyed by German occupiers in 1939, the monument became a symbol of the destruction of Polish culture. Despite numerous challenges, its reconstruction began after World War II in 1959, and a replica was unveiled in 1960, restoring the statue to its original form. Today, the Kościuszko Monument is regarded as one of Łódź's most iconic symbols, with flower-laying ceremonies held at its base during national celebrations. Interestingly, some of the original reliefs survived the turmoil of war and have found a new home in museums. The Kościuszko Monument continues to stand as a reminder of the values of patriotism and Poland's historical heritage.
