wikipedia
The tenement house at 6-8 3 Maja Street in Katowice, known as "Kamienica Pod Butem" (Tenement Under the Shoe) and "Haus Kochmann," is a historic architectural landmark from 1907, designed by Hugo Grünfelda in the Art Nouveau style with Neo-Gothic and modernist elements. Its facade stands out with decorations inspired by oak motifs and a distinctive heraldic shield depicting a shoe, which inspired the building’s popular name. Previously, the site was home to a shoe store run by Fritz Kochman, and the original building from 1860 was replaced by the current structure. The tenement has always served mixed residential and commercial purposes, with the ground floor arranged for shops, including the shoe store, a textile shop, and the "Centrala Światła" lighting store. In 1989, the building was entered into the register of historical monuments, and in 2004 and 2013–2014, it underwent comprehensive renovation and modernization to improve its technical condition. The building consists of two sections, constructed in different years and styles, with five stories and a basement. The facade is clad in red brick, and its asymmetry, along with oriel windows featuring loggias, gives it a unique character. The interior has retained original woodwork, ceramic flooring, and stylized wall motifs, adding to its historical charm. As an example of Art Nouveau architecture, the tenement not only serves a practical function but also forms an important part of Katowice's cultural heritage.
