wikipedia
The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Płock is one of the oldest and most important historical monuments in Poland, situated on Tumskie Hill overlooking the Vistula River. Its history dates back to the 11th century, when the first wooden cathedral was built on the initiative of Bolesław the Bold or Władysław Herman. In 1130, Bishop Alexander of Malonne began the construction of a new Romanesque church, which was consecrated in 1144. The cathedral has undergone numerous destructions and reconstructions, including fires and invasions by Lithuanians and Prussians, leading to the emergence of various architectural styles such as Gothic, Renaissance, and Classicism. The Renaissance cathedral of 1531–1534, designed by Italian architects, introduced new stylistic elements while incorporating parts of the Romanesque structure. In the 18th century, the façade was remodeled in the Classical style. In the 20th century, the cathedral underwent extensive renovation, restoring its Renaissance character and introducing new architectural features. The interior of the cathedral is adorned with rich artistic furnishings, including polychrome works by Władysław Drapiewski and unique marble altars. A significant feature is the "Płock Doors," bronze sculptures that were unfortunately lost, with a replica now displayed in the cathedral. The cathedral is also renowned as the burial site of Polish rulers such as Władysław Herman and Bolesław Wrymouth, and its crypts hold the remains of numerous clergy members. The cathedral holds the status of a minor basilica, granted by Pope Pius X in 1910, underscoring its historical and cultural significance. Each year, the Płock International Organ Music Festival takes place here, and perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament attracts the faithful. The cathedral stands as a symbol of Płock’s rich history and its role as one of the most important religious centers in Poland.
