The Primate Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gniezno

The Primate Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gniezno, also known as the Gniezno Archcathedral, is one of the most important architectural and historical landmarks in Poland. Located on Lech Hill, it has served as the main temple of the Gniezno metropolitan archdiocese since the year 1000. It is the burial site of Saint Adalbert, the patron saint of Poland, and the location of five royal coronations, underscoring its significance in the nation's history. The architecture of the basilica is a phenomenal example of Gothic style, featuring a three-nave basilica layout, a polygonal apse, and a famous stained-glass window that fills the interior with light. Notable architectural elements include the Baroque confessio of Saint Adalbert and richly decorated chapels, such as the Potocki Chapel, where prominent figures from Polish history, including Primate Ignacy Krasicki, are buried. The cathedral was granted the title of minor basilica in 1931 and was listed as a historic monument in 1994. In 1979, it was visited by Pope John Paul II, further enhancing its religious and cultural importance. An interesting fact is that the crypts house the oldest tomb inscription in Poland, dating back to around 1006, as well as remnants of a stone structure from the 9th century, attesting to the early presence of Christianity in the region.
