wikipedia
The Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom is a self-governing cultural institution in the Silesian Voivodeship, comprising seven substantive and auxiliary departments. The museum's collections are housed in a historic building from 1929–1930 and in the former county administration building from 1899–1902, both distinguished by their eclectic architecture. The museum boasts a rich collection, including the third-largest assemblage of Hebrew religious books in Poland. Its history dates back to 1910 with the establishment of the Bytom Historical and Museum Society, which later transformed into a self-governing institution in 1928. After World War II, the museum adopted its current name, the Upper Silesian Museum, and became a central hub for academic activities in the region. Its collections span archaeology, ethnography, history, and natural history, featuring valuable items related to mining, rural crafts, and both Polish and European art. The museum is renowned for its educational initiatives and collaborations with other scientific institutions, regularly organizing temporary and permanent exhibitions such as "From the Life of the Silesian People" and the Gallery of Polish Painting. In 2022, the museum building was listed in the register of monuments, highlighting its architectural and cultural significance. A unique aspect is its specialized library, which holds over 50,000 volumes covering literature on archaeology, ethnography, and history. The museum engages both local and international communities by partnering with environmental organizations and conducting field research, solidifying its role as a key cultural and scientific center in the region.
