wikipedia
Wąbrzeźno, located in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, is a city with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Once known as Wambrez, and later as Frideck and Briesen, it is renowned for its beautiful lakes, such as Zamkowe, Frydek, and Sicieńskie, which create a picturesque setting. Architecturally, the ruins of the castle of the Chełmno bishops on Castle Hill stand out, dating back to the 14th century and serving as the bishop's residence until 1660. The city also features the 17th-century Church of the Holy Apostles Simon and Jude Thaddeus, known for its miraculous image of the Pregnant Mother of God, and a New Apostolic church, which was formerly a Protestant temple converted to Roman Catholic after 1945. The neo-Gothic town hall from 1892 now serves as the seat of the city authorities. The city cherishes its traditions, and in 2002, a bugle call composed by Józef Mossakowski was introduced. Wąbrzeźno has also gained recognition in education, hosting institutions such as the Zygmunt Działowski High School. During the interwar period, the Polish National Institute operated here, and Wąbrzeźno was regarded as the Polish Oxford. Together with the Wąbrzeźno County, a bypass was built, and public utility facilities were modernized. An interesting fact is that Wąbrzeźno had its own railway line, which was the first electrified line on Polish soil, operating until 1990. The city is also active in sports, with the "Unia Wąbrzeźno" club achieving success in the III league. Wąbrzeźno has maintained a partnership with the German city of Syke since 2006. Nature conservation in the city includes natural monuments, such as the common ash tree. The Municipal Cable Television, operating since 1992, covers local events and rebroadcasts City Council meetings, creating a strong connection with residents. Wąbrzeźno, with its historical and cultural treasures, is an important point in the region, connecting a rich past with a dynamic present.
