wikipedia
The retention reservoir in Włodzienin is a structure covering an area of 86 hectares, built between 2005 and 2007 in the Opole Voivodeship, within the Głubczyce County. Situated on the Głubczyce Plateau, at the foothills of the Opawskie Mountains, it is fed by the Troja River and the Jędrychowicki Stream. Its main purpose is to protect the Troja River valley from flooding, which has been achieved through a significant reduction of flood waves and a delay in the peak flood surge, thereby minimizing the risk of flooding in nearby towns. The reservoir is also intended to serve as a water source for agriculture, a recreational area, a site for fish farming, and a tourist attraction. Key components of the reservoir include a tower spillway, a discharge channel, and various types of outlets. As part of the investment, access roads were also rebuilt. Unfortunately, one year after the reservoir was put into operation, serious structural problems were revealed, such as leaks, resulting from the use of low-quality concrete, inadequate compaction of the dam body, and defects in the pipelines. Due to these flaws, it was decided to drain the reservoir, which allowed for its partial agricultural use and prevented natural overgrowth. It is only filled during emergency situations, which makes for an interesting fact about water management in the region. Despite the structural issues, the reservoir still has the potential to fulfill many functions that are important for the local community.
