Warsaw Grochów

Warszawa Grochów is a significant holding station, locomotive depot, and carriage depot for both PKP Intercity and Mazovian Railways, serving as the technical support base for Warszawa Wschodnia station. Located in the Praga-Południe district, within the area of Olszynka Grochowska, the station has a rich history dating back to the 1930s, when it began servicing multiple-unit trains. The facility was destroyed during World War II and played a key role in the post-war reconstruction of the railway fleet. In the 1950s and 1960s, the station acquired new locomotives and electric units, including nearly all major series used on Polish tracks. In 2002, PKP Intercity took over the operation of the station, expanding it to meet modern standards—it now spans 64 hectares, features 57 km of tracks, repair halls, and is fully equipped to service modern trains. In 2012, the High-Speed Train Service Center was established, dedicated to maintaining Pendolino trainsets. The architecture of Grochów reflects its technical and logistical functions, with modern buildings blending with historical elements, showcasing the evolving railway infrastructure. A notable feature is the use of innovative engineering solutions, such as an underfloor wheel lathe and advanced safety systems, making it one of the more modern facilities in Europe. The station also operates an anti-icing system and a train wash, underscoring its commitment to maintaining the technical condition of the fleet. Additionally, the station is a hub of intense railway activity, with hundreds of trains departing daily, making it a crucial communication node.
