Warsaw/Modlin Airport, known by the IATA code WMI, was established on the site of a former military airfield and began civilian operations in 2012. Its construction, which cost approximately 451.4 million PLN, was aimed at easing air traffic previously directed to Warsaw Chopin Airport, primarily for low-cost airlines. Architecturally, the terminal designed by Stefan Kuryłowicz features a modern design with extensive use of glass facades, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Despite initial infrastructure issues, including problems with the runway, Modlin has become a significant hub in the European flight network, mainly serving Ryanair flights. From a historical perspective, the airport is a prime example of the transformation of a military facility into civilian infrastructure, a process that involved demanding construction procedures and environmental protests. The opposition stemmed from environmental concerns, including the proximity of the Vistula River and the presence of birds, which impacted flight safety. Interestingly, the airport does not hold the status of Warsaw’s second airport, even though such a solution was initially planned. Today, Modlin handles up to 3.5 million passengers annually and remains a key location for low-cost carriers. Future plans include investments in railway infrastructure to improve the airport’s accessibility. Currently, connections to downtown Warsaw are provided by buses and regular taxi services. The airport has achieved several milestones, including serving its one-millionth passenger in 2013, and since 2014, it has operated an ILS system, which has enhanced flight safety. Despite earlier challenges, Modlin has become an important point on Europe’s aviation map, offering regular connections to various cities across the region. Its ongoing development continues, which may attract an even greater number of passengers in the future.
