Water Market is one of the three market squares in the Old Town of Zamość, located in its southern part. It has a rectangular shape measuring 50 by 65 meters, and its name most likely comes from the nearby floodplains. Unlike the other market squares, Water Market served residential functions, surrounded by the houses of prominent residents, and originally had a square shape. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the square underwent a shift, which was related to the transformations in Zamość during the partitions of Poland. After World War II, the area was developed as a green square. In recent years, the architecture around the market has been diverse – to the north, there are harmonious tenement houses, while to the south, there is a representative complex of the former church and convent of the Poor Clares. These buildings, later converted for military and cultural purposes, underwent revitalization and now serve as a music school. In 2010, Water Market underwent a thorough modernization, transforming its space into a pedestrian zone with a fountain and plans to rebuild the tenement houses of the eastern frontage. This is a testament to the revitalization processes in the Old Town, restoring the historical character of this place.
