wikipedia
Wiślica, a picturesque town in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, situated on the left bank of the Nida River, captivates with its rich architectural and historical heritage. The town was granted city rights in 1326, and after a long period of stagnation, lost them in 1870, only to regain city status on January 1, 2018, becoming the smallest city in Poland. Wiślica was an important administrative center as early as the Piast dynasty era, and its significance grew during the reign of Prince Casimir the Just, who initiated the construction of the collegiate church. The Basilica of the Collegiate Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1350, founded by Casimir the Great, is the oldest and largest two-nave church in Poland, renowned for its Gothic vaults and fragments of Russo-Byzantine frescoes. In the basilica's crypts, remains of earlier Romanesque churches and a unique orant plaque have been discovered. The town also features the 16th-century Długosz House, which now serves as a parish house and museum, a 15th-century bell tower, and remnants of a 10th-century fortified settlement. Wiślica has a rich history associated with significant events, such as gatherings of knights and noble assemblies. Its cultural tradition includes the activities of the Polish Brethren and the education of Casimir Jagiellon's sons by Jan Długosz. The town was abundant in craftsmanship and regional traditions, and its importance attracted numerous rulers. Tragic events of the 20th century, such as World War II, left a mark on the memory of its inhabitants, including the establishment of a ghetto for Jews. Today, Wiślica is a place where history blends with modernity, with the Archaeological Museum caring for its heritage and promoting knowledge of the past. In addition to its rich heritage, the town is enriched by monuments such as the statue of St. John of Nepomuk and mentions of a centuries-old sports tradition, including the activities of the LKS "Gród" club. Transport is provided by direct bus connections to larger cities, and Wiślica boasts a well-developed local community that participates in numerous cultural events.
