The Zamenhof Mural in Białystok, unveiled in 2008, is located on the blind wall of a building at 26 Ludwik Zamenhof Street and commemorates the creator of Esperanto, Ludwik Zamenhof, and his friends, Jakub Szapiro and Abraham Zbar. Painted by artist Andrzej Muszyński, the mural is an important architectural element, depicting not only Zamenhof but also the historical connections with Esperanto, making it the world's first Esperanto-themed mural. The history of this location dates back to 1959, when a commemorative plaque was installed there to mark the centenary of Zamenhof's birth. The mural was unveiled by the Mayor of Białystok, Tadeusz Truskolaski, and prominent figures from the World Esperanto Association. Artistically, the mural portrays Zamenhof's friends sitting in a painted window on the first floor, while Zamenhof himself stands on a balcony on the second floor. On the third floor, contemporary residents of Białystok are depicted holding balloons in Olympic colors, symbolizing the unity of nations through Esperanto. In 2017, the mural was used in the city's promotional campaign marking the centenary of Zamenhof's death, further highlighting its cultural and historical significance for Białystok. The mural not only celebrates local heritage but also resonates within a broader international context, reflecting the ideals of communication and understanding among nations.
