wikipedia
The Zawodzie Archaeological Reserve in Kalisz is an important site documenting the history of an early medieval stronghold, whose origins date back to the years 850–860. The main part of the reserve is a partially reconstructed fortified settlement, surrounded by a defensive rampart that in some places reaches up to 5 meters in height. The stronghold was first mentioned in 1106 in the chronicle of Gallus Anonymus. Włodzimierz Demetrykiewicz initiated archaeological research in 1903, and further work was carried out between 1958 and 1965, on the occasion of the 1800th anniversary of Kalisz. During this period, the relics of the palatium, the Collegiate Church of St. Paul the Apostle, and defensive structures were uncovered. Between 1983 and 1992, the remains of a wooden and clay church were discovered. After the completion of the research, it was decided to develop the excavation site to ensure its protection and simultaneously utilize it for exhibition purposes. In June 1995, the first pavilion, known as the gate building, was opened, featuring models, photographs, and informational panels. In 2007, thanks to funding from the European Regional Development Fund, the structures of the stronghold were reconstructed, allowing for a better presentation of the rich history and culture of the region. The reserve serves as a valuable space for exploring the archaeological heritage of Kalisz and its impact on the history of Poland.
