Zelów is an urban-rural municipality located in the Łódź Voivodeship, within Bełchatów County, with its seat in the town of Zelów. Over the years, the administrative boundaries of the municipality have changed; it was part of the Piotrków Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998. In 2007, the municipality had a population of 15,224 and covered an area of 167.08 km², predominantly consisting of agricultural and forest land. The municipality in its current form was reestablished on January 1, 1973, largely based on the area of the former Bujny Szlacheckie municipality, highlighting its historical complexity. The municipality includes numerous villages such as Bujny Księże, Grabostów, and Wola Pszczółecka, as well as smaller settlements that contribute to the local landscape. As part of Bełchatów County, which covers 17.27% of the county's total area, the municipality showcases local traditions and cultural diversity, closely tied to agriculture, a key pillar of the regional economy. An interesting feature is the presence of colonies and smaller settlements, reflecting the local settlement structure. The municipality borders several other administrative units, fostering cooperation and cultural exchange. Despite its modest size, Zelów is an important part of the Łódź region, both historically and culturally.
