The Żytno Commune, located in the Łódź Voivodeship within the Radomsko County, boasts a rich history dating back to the 15th century, when Żytno held town rights. The area was owned by prominent noble families, such as the Borzykowskis, Pągowskis, and Ostrowskis. The commune’s economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, with industrial-scale cultivation of sugar beets and hops since the 19th century. Small-scale industry, horse stud farms, and fishponds also developed in the region. The residents actively participated in national uprisings and partisan struggles during World War II, highlighting their engagement in the country’s history. Żytno Commune is a region where cultural life flourished thanks to the presence of schools and the social activity of its inhabitants. In 1973, the commune was formally established through the merger of several smaller administrative units. The commune lies within the Pilica River basin and is naturally bordered by forests, providing favorable conditions for the development of agritourism. The area consists not only of agricultural land (51%) and forests (39%) but also protected zones, such as the Dębowiec Nature Reserve, home to unique plant species, including the broad-leaved lime and rare herbaceous plants. The commune covers an area of 197.62 km², accounting for 13.69% of Radomsko County. It comprises numerous localities, including village administrative units (sołectwa), non-administrative villages, and settlements.
