wikipedia
The Church of the Virgin Mary in Lubań is the oldest religious building in the city and serves as the parish church for the Evangelical-Augsburg community. Its history dates back to 1384, when the first church was constructed. However, this initial structure was completely destroyed by the Hussites in 1427. The current church was built in 1452 as a cemetery chapel, highlighting its connection to local funeral traditions. Over the centuries, the church underwent numerous renovations and modernizations, with the most significant work taking place in 1668, 1732, 1815, 1840, and 1887–1888. During the latter period, the building was thoroughly reconstructed, including the addition of a tower, under the direction of architect Abel Augustin. An interesting fact is that in 1732, the ceiling, pulpit, and windows were replaced, and new organ pipes were purchased, reflecting the growing cultural and religious significance of the site. The church is not only an important place of worship but also a vital part of Lubań's cultural heritage, showcasing the evolution of sacral architecture over the centuries.
