wikipedia
Grodno Castle, also known as Kynsburg, is a historic structure situated in the Black Mountains, atop Mount Choina in Lower Silesia. Likely built by Bolko I, it evolved over the centuries, initially serving as the largest castle in Silesia before undergoing various reconstructions, primarily in the 16th century under the direction of Maciej von Logau. The castle is surrounded by an irregular defensive wall with a quadrangular tower and a gate, which is a unique architectural feature. Inside, there were buildings and a courtyard, with the entire complex undergoing significant changes due to wartime actions and 19th-century renovations. The castle’s cultural significance is enriched by local legends tied to knightly conquests, ghosts, and the peculiar story of castellan Margaret. In literature, the castle appears as Waldhof in Paul Keller’s novel, highlighting its importance in local culture. Today, the castle houses a museum, established in 1965 and managed by the Walim Municipality since 2009. Grodno Castle attracts tourists with its picturesque views and hiking trails, including the Trail of the Piast Castles and the European E3 trail. An interesting legend speaks of a chest hidden beneath the courtyard, allegedly secured with mines, adding an air of mystery to this location.
