wikipedia
Święciechowa, formerly known as Schwetzkau, is a village in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, within the Leszno County, which historically held town rights (until 1934). The settlement has medieval origins and is mentioned in documents dating back to the 11th century, including an act from 1181. Święciechowa was owned by the Benedictines from Lubiń, who enjoyed privileges such as customs duties, an inn, and hunting rights. By the 14th century, the locality grew in significance, obtaining German town rights, which contributed to the development of trade and crafts, particularly in the 18th century when local artisans specialized in milling stone carving. Numerous documents have been preserved, testifying to trade disputes with neighboring settlements, highlighting Święciechowa's importance in regional trade relations. The town hosted markets and fairs, and in the 16th century, its residents gained numerous privileges, including tax exemptions. Święciechowa was also known for cultural initiatives, such as the organization of shooting brotherhoods and craft guilds. As a result of the Second Partition of Poland, the town fell under Prussian rule, and after World War II, due to demographic changes, its German inhabitants were forcibly displaced. Today, Święciechowa serves as the seat of the municipality, with a population of approximately 2,756 (as of 2011). The village preserves several historical monuments, including the urban layout of the former town, the Church of St. James the Apostle from the late 16th century, a manor house with a park, and a post mill from 1878, reflecting its rich history and architectural traditions. The locality is also active in sports, hosting the football club KS Kormoran Święciechowa. Święciechowa cooperates with partner towns such as Aixe-sur-Vienne, Großhabersdorf, and Malinska, underscoring its openness to international collaboration.
