Żagań County, established in 1999 in the Lubusz Voivodeship, has its seat in the town of Żagań. Located in the southwestern part of the voivodeship, on the edge of the Silesian Lowland, it was home to 78,953 people as of December 31, 2019. The county includes urban, urban-rural, and rural municipalities, such as Żagań, Gozdnica, Iłowa, Małomice, and Szprotawa. It borders the counties of Żary, Zielona Góra, Nowa Sól, Polkowice, Bolesławiec, and Zgorzelec. In the post-war years, the vast majority of settlers were people from the Eastern Borderlands (Kresy). By 2020, the population had slightly decreased to 78,634.
The county is rich in natural beauty, with forests covering 44% of its area, primarily the Lower Silesian Wilderness (Bory Dolnośląskie), through which the Bóbr River and its tributaries flow. Transportation in the region is supported by the A18 motorway and the S3 expressway, along with national and regional roads. The rail network connects the area to cities such as Wrocław, Żagań, and Gubin.
