wikipedia
The Archcathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Andrew in Frombork is a Gothic church constructed between 1329 and 1388 as a three-nave hall structure with an elongated chancel. It was built on Cathedral Hill, replacing an earlier wooden temple that served as the main diocesan church. It is the burial place of Nicolaus Copernicus and serves cultural functions, including hosting the International Organ Music Festival. In 1994, the site was inscribed on the List of Historic Monuments. Notable architectural features include Gothic elements such as the Chapel of St. George and a Neo-Renaissance spire from the late 16th century. The interior of the basilica is richly decorated, featuring the main altar from 1747–1752 and the Frombork Polyptych. Also remarkable are the late Baroque stalls and 16 side altars from the 17th century. The church houses numerous epitaphs, including the famous one dedicated to Nicolaus Copernicus. The cathedral organ, deeply tied to the history of the church, has undergone several renovations and reconstructions, now boasting an impressive 66 stops. An interesting fact is the presence of a mighty pedunculate oak named *Mikołaj* (Nicolaus) growing near the cathedral, as well as the issuance of a postage stamp featuring the cathedral by the Polish Post in 1971.
