wikipedia
Będzin Castle, erected in the mid-14th century by Casimir the Great, is a medieval defensive fortress forming part of the so-called Eagles' Nests system in Lesser Poland. Its history dates back to the 9th century when a stronghold was built on Castle Hill. Located on a hill overlooking the Czarna Przemsza River, the castle underwent numerous expansions and reconstructions. Initially, it consisted of a characteristic cylindrical tower, and its walls were constructed using the "opus emplectum" technique with local dolomite. Over the centuries, the fortress was repeatedly destroyed, including during the Swedish Deluge, but also rebuilt, with its current appearance owing to a reconstruction carried out between 1952 and 1956. Architecturally, the castle is distinguished by its five-story tower and the remains of defensive walls. The castle was the site of many historical events, including negotiations in 1588 between Poland and the Holy Roman Empire regarding the release of Archduke Maximilian III of Austria. It also reflects changes in land management in Poland, from royal burgraves to lifetime holders, up until the partitions period when the castle passed into the hands of private citizens. In the 20th century, thanks to the initiatives of local activists, the castle was restored and transformed into a museum, which to this day collects artifacts related to the history of the region. In 1971, the Polish Post issued a stamp featuring the castle, highlighting its cultural significance. Będzin Castle is now open to visitors, and its surroundings serve as a tourist attraction, offering diverse perspectives of the Dąbrowa Basin. Its cellars also house a café where visitors can relax after touring. The castle not only functions as a historical monument but also as a cultural center, embedding itself in regional tradition.
